Below the shield, a scroll bears the national motto UNIDADE · TRABALHO · DISCIPLINA. The date 1977 appears in the upper field, and the denomination 2500 Dobras is inscribed along the lower rim. The country name REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S.TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE runs along the outer legend, and a small mintmark is visible to the right of the coat of arms.
