São Tomé e Príncipe issued this piece as part of a wave of late-1990s collector coins produced by small-nation mints looking to generate foreign currency revenue through numismatic sales — the domestic economy having little use for a gold coin at any denomination. The butterfly hologram element was applied post-strike, a technique that was genuinely novel for sovereign coinage in 1998 and attracted significant attention from thematic collectors at the time.
