Issued to commemorate the Chapultepec Peace Accords of January 1992, which ended twelve years of civil war between the Salvadoran government and the FMLN guerrilla coalition — a conflict that had killed an estimated 75,000 people. The accords were brokered in Mexico City under UN mediation, and El Salvador moved quickly to mark the moment with this issue.
The Banco Central de Reserva was itself operating under severe fiscal strain at the time, making a gold commemorative an unusual choice for a country still rebuilding its institutions from wartime disruption.
