Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the World Wildlife Fund, this gold commemorative was part of a coordinated multinational release in which several countries simultaneously struck coins under WWF licensing — Thailand among them. Rama IX, Bhumibol Adulyadej, maintained a well-documented personal commitment to conservation, and royal endorsement of the issue was not merely ceremonial. His decades of royally-initiated reforestation and watershed projects gave the Thai issue a degree of institutional sincerity that similar coins from other participating mints arguably lacked.
The .900 fine gold composition places it within standard Thai commemorative practice of the period, with the balance copper rather than silver despite the parenthetical notation in some references.
