Issued to commemorate the formal conferring of the title Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Princess Sirindhorn in December 1977, when King Bhumibol Adulyadej elevated her to a rank that placed her in the line of succession — an unprecedented move under Thai succession law, which had not traditionally recognized female heirs. The Royal Thai Mint produced this piece in a limited commemorative run, as was standard practice for royal honorific issues of the period.
The 1977 title conferment was politically significant: it came at a moment of considerable instability following the October 1976 coup, and the elevation of the widely beloved princess carried unmistakable messaging about dynastic continuity.
