Tanzania's "Year of the Pig" issues belong to a wave of Chinese lunar calendar coins produced for the Asian collector market by African sovereign mints with no domestic cultural connection to the series. The Bank of Tanzania functions here essentially as a licensing vehicle — the coins are designed, marketed, and distributed almost entirely through European and Asian bullion trading firms, with Tanzania providing legal tender status in exchange for a fee arrangement.
