| Obverse description | The Somali national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield bearing horizontal lines and a five-pointed star, supported by two leopards rampant on either side, with crossed palm fronds below. A beaded border runs along the coin's periphery. The legend 'REPUBLIC OF SOMALIA' arcs along the upper field, while the denomination '250 SHILLINGS' is inscribed along the lower field. Somalia's 1998 commemorative program was essentially a licensing operation — the country's transitional authorities had minimal functioning government infrastructure but retained enough nominal sovereignty to contract with foreign minting agencies eager to produce themed issues for the collector market. The Titanic release rode the wave of James Cameron's film, which opened in December 1997 and became the highest-grossing movie in history at that point.
These pieces were never intended for Somali circulation and saw none.
