Issued the same year John Paul II died — April 2005 — this is one of dozens of memorial pieces rushed out by Somalia's nominal government, which had no functioning central bank and licensed its coin-issuing rights to private minting agencies operating largely out of Europe. The arrangement was entirely commercial; Somalia had no diplomatic or religious relationship with the Vatican that prompted the issue.
