| Reverse description | A finely modelled left-facing portrait bust of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, first President of Kenya, occupies the central field, depicting him in civilian attire with a short beard and close-cropped hair, rendered in bold high relief. The truncation of the bust is visible at the lower centre of the field. The legend 'MZEE JOMO KENYATTA' arcs around the upper and lateral periphery of the coin in spaced raised Latin capitals, following the curvature of the rim. The portrait exhibits strong sculptural detail in the facial features and garment. The polished field provides a sharp contrast to the relief elements. |

Kenya's 1966 gold issues were struck to commemorate the country's third anniversary of independence, with this 250 Shillings piece sitting at the top of a four-coin proof set commissioned by the newly established Central Bank. Jomo Kenyatta, who had spent the better part of a decade imprisoned by the British colonial administration — including nearly two years in the remote Lokitaung prison above Lake Turkana — was by 1966 firmly installed as the country's first President.
The Franklin Mint produced the series under contract, a common arrangement for newly independent African states lacking domestic minting infrastructure in the 1960s.
