250 Shillings Emperor Hirohito

Somalia's late-1990s and early-2000s novelty coinage program had little to do with domestic monetary policy — the country had no functioning central government following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in 1991. These pieces were produced under licensing arrangements with foreign minting companies targeting the collector market, with "Somalia" essentially leased as an issuing authority. The Hirohito piece is part of a broader Japanese Emperors series from that program.

Hirohito reigned from 1926 until his death in 1989 — the longest reign of any Japanese emperor in recorded history. His posthumous name is Showa, meaning "Radiant Japan" or "Enlightened Harmony," though the era is better remembered for the Pacific War he presided over and never unambiguously renounced.
