| Opmerkingen |
The 250 Rupees denomination was struck specifically for the Silver Jubilee of King Birendra's reign — an unusual face value with no place in ordinary commerce, issued purely as a commemorative. Thomas De La Rue produced it in London, as they had handled Nepal's banknote printing for decades by this point.
Birendra came to the throne in 1972 following his father Mahendra's death, making 1997 the twenty-fifth year of his reign. He would be assassinated in the royal massacre of June 2001, which lends this celebratory issue an unintended historical weight.
