Gyanendra came to power under extraordinary circumstances: the 2001 Nepalese royal massacre killed King Birendra, his wife, and seven other family members during a gathering at the Narayanhiti Palace. Gyanendra, absent that night, was crowned within days. This coin was issued the same year, during the immediate political shock that followed — before Gyanendra's increasingly authoritarian rule led to his eventual deposition and the abolition of the monarchy in 2008.
