Additional information

The Azov was a ship of the line that distinguished itself at the Battle of Navarino in 1827, the last major fleet engagement fought entirely under sail, where a combined British, French, and Russian squadron destroyed the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet. The Azov sank or disabled five enemy vessels that day, earning the first-ever stern flag — a St. George's naval ensign — awarded to a Russian warship. Mikhail Lazarev commanded the Azov during that battle and went on to serve as commander of the Black Sea Fleet, modernizing it substantially before his death in 1851.
