| Obverse description | The obverse retains the original design of the host coin — a 200 Réis piece of João (John) IV or Afonso (Alfonso) VI — featuring the royal arms of Portugal within an ornate shield, centered on a cross of the Order of Christ. The field bears the hammered devices characteristic of mid-17th-century Portuguese coinage. The peripheral Latin legend reads IOANNES IIII DEI GRATIA PORTVG ET ALG REX, identifying the original issuing monarch. A countermark applied under Pedro II, consisting of the numerals '250' surmounted by a crown, is struck prominently in the upper portion of the coin's field, re-denominating the piece. Countermarking was carried out at multiple Portuguese minting centers including Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Guarda, Évora, and Tavira pursuant to the law of 14 June 1698. |
