Obverse description The obverse retains the original design of the host coin — a 200 Réis piece of João (John) IV or Afonso (Alfonso) VI — featuring the royal arms of Portugal within an ornate shield, centered on a cross of the Order of Christ. The field bears the hammered devices characteristic of mid-17th-century Portuguese coinage. The peripheral Latin legend reads IOANNES IIII DEI GRATIA PORTVG ET ALG REX, identifying the original issuing monarch. A countermark applied under Pedro II, consisting of the numerals '250' surmounted by a crown, is struck prominently in the upper portion of the coin's field, re-denominating the piece. Countermarking was carried out at multiple Portuguese minting centers including Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Guarda, Évora, and Tavira pursuant to the law of 14 June 1698.

Reverse description The reverse displays a large cross of the Order of Christ dominating the central field, with the four quadrants of the cross each containing a distinctive shield or pellet device, consistent with the original 1/2 Cruzado host coin type. A beaded inner circle frames the cross motif, itself enclosed within an outer beaded border. The circumferential Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES ('In this sign you shall conquer') runs around the full periphery between the two borders. The crowned '250' countermark, oval in form, is visible struck over the upper arm of the cross, clearly distinguishable from the original hammered design beneath it.
