Bolivia's 1975 silver commemoratives were issued under the military government of Hugo Banzer, who had seized power in a 1971 coup and used nationalistic anniversaries as vehicles for regime legitimacy. The 150th anniversary of Bolivian independence from Spain provided the occasion — though the irony of a military dictatorship commemorating liberation was apparently lost on no one in La Paz.
