| Beschrijving keerzijde | Detailed frontal elevation of the A-Ma Temple (Templo de A-Ma) rendered in fine relief, depicting the ornate main gate with flanking walls, decorative roof ridges, and a central plaque inscribed '媽閣廟' in the field above the entrance. Subsidiary plaques with Chinese characters appear on the gate pillars. The legend 'A-MA TEMPLE' curves along the upper left arc and 'TEMPLO DE A-MA' along the upper right arc, with '媽閣廟' completing the trilingual inscription. The architectural detail captures the traditional Chinese temple style characteristic of this historic Macanese landmark. |

Issued under Macao's twelve-year lunar cycle commemorative program, the 2008 rat year coin falls at the opening of a Chinese zodiac series that the Monetary Authority had been producing since the mid-1990s. The rat holds the first position in the traditional cycle — a detail that gave this particular release mild ceremonial emphasis in the Chinese-speaking collector market, especially given the convergence with the Beijing Olympic year.
