| Obverse description | Central design features a stylized rat in relief against a vertically divided field: the left half is plain gold and the right half is colorfully enameled with pink peony blossoms and green foliage on a red ground. The denomination '250圓 / PATACAS' appears to the lower left of the rat, with the date '戊子年 / 2008' below. The legend '中國澳門' is inscribed along the upper arc, with 'MACAU, CHINA' along the lower periphery. |

| Additional information |
Issued under Macao's twelve-year lunar cycle commemorative program, the 2008 rat year coin falls at the opening of a Chinese zodiac series that the Monetary Authority had been producing since the mid-1990s. The rat holds the first position in the traditional cycle — a detail that gave this particular release mild ceremonial emphasis in the Chinese-speaking collector market, especially given the convergence with the Beijing Olympic year.
