Macau's lunar gold series was issued under the authority of the Monetary and Exchange Board of Macau (AMCM) during the final years before the territory's gambling and tourism revenue began reshaping its mint priorities entirely. The 2002 Horse issue falls within a run of 22-karat lunar pieces that tracked Hong Kong's parallel series closely but maintained distinct local iconography rooted in Portuguese-Macanese administrative tradition — a distinction that effectively ended with the 1999 handover to China, making this one of the earliest Horse strikes produced under full PRC sovereignty over the territory.
