Macau's dragon-year gold issues occupy an unusual commercial niche — produced by the Monetary Authority of Macao primarily for the collector and gift market rather than any circulating purpose, with distribution concentrated around Lunar New Year. The 2012 issue corresponds to the Year of the Water Dragon, the rarest of the twelve-animal cycle's elemental pairings, occurring only once every sixty years.
