Macau's lunar gold series has been issued annually since 1993, with each piece struck by the Monetary Authority under a currency framework that has operated independently since the pataca was decoupled from the Hong Kong dollar in the early 1980s. The 2006 Dog issue falls mid-series, at a point when demand from mainland Chinese collectors had begun driving secondary market premiums well above bullion value for the stronger zodiac years.
