Macao's lunar gold series occupies an unusual institutional position — issued under the Monetary Authority of Macao, which has operated monetary policy in a jurisdiction where the pataca itself plays a secondary role to the Hong Kong dollar in everyday commerce. The 2017 Rooster corresponds to the tenth in the twelve-year zodiac cycle, a year that opened on January 28th by the traditional lunisolar calendar.
KM#178 was struck in the same 7.78g format shared across much of the region's fractional lunar gold output, sized to align with a half-troy-ounce subdivision favored by Chinese collector markets since the 1980s.
