The Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, marks the site where Siddhartha Gautama is traditionally held to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. UNESCO inscribed it in 2002, a decade before this coin's issue. Bhutan's connection to the site is doctrinal rather than geographic — Vajrayana Buddhism, the state religion, traces direct lineage through traditions that regard Bodh Gaya as the axis of the faith.
The Royal Monetary Authority has issued commemorative silver ngultrum pieces tied to Buddhist heritage sites since the 1990s, largely targeting the collector and gift markets in Buddhist-majority nations.
