Italy's chronic small-coin shortage of the 1970s pushed hundreds of savings banks, municipalities, and retailers into issuing their own fiduciary notes — mini-assegni, technically checks but functioning as fractional currency. The Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto was among the more prolific issuers in Trentino, producing denominations covering the gap left by undersupplied 50, 100, and 200 lire coins. The Banca d'Italia tolerated the practice until the late 1970s, when pressure to normalize small-denomination circulation led to its gradual suppression.
These circulated intensely and briefly, which makes genuinely worn examples the norm rather than the exception.
