Haiti's 1977 gold commemorative program was part of a broader series of high-denomination collector issues produced under Jean-Claude Duvalier, largely marketed to foreign buyers rather than domestic circulation. Lindbergh's transatlantic flight of May 1927 was the nominal occasion — the coin appeared for the 50th anniversary — though Haiti's connection to the event is tenuous at best. The Spirit of St. Louis did not land in Port-au-Prince.
Struck to .900 fineness, these pieces were minted in limited quantities and sold through international coin dealers, never entering Haitian commerce in any meaningful way.
