Additional information

Guinea's lunar landing commemorative was issued under Sékou Touré's government, which had broken so thoroughly with France in 1958 — the only territory to vote "non" in de Gaulle's constitutional referendum — that the French withdrew all personnel and aid within months, taking the technical infrastructure with them. That a country still rebuilding its monetary system a decade later produced a high-purity silver commemorative speaks to the political utility Touré saw in aligning Guinea symbolically with the Apollo program, positioning the nation within the nonaligned world's fascination with the space race.

Struck in two-year emission spanning 1969–1970, likely by a European contract mint.
