Alpha Yaya Diallo was a Fulani chief from the Labé region who resisted French colonial encroachment in Guinea with enough persistence that the French eventually deported him to Dahomey in 1905, where he died in 1912. His rehabilitation as a national hero under Sékou Touré's post-independence government fit neatly into the regime's project of constructing an anti-colonial Guinean identity — this coin series was part of that effort, issued in the years following Guinea's abrupt 1958 break with France.
The series was struck for the collector market rather than circulation, typical of many small-nation issues of the period marketed through European distributors.
