Senegal is a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, whose common currency — the CFA franc — is issued by the BCEAO and pegged to the euro. Individual member states have no independent monetary authority, which makes this piece a legal-tender curiosity: nominally denominated in a currency Senegal neither controls nor mints, struck in gold for a collector market that has nothing to do with West African commerce.
