Baarle-Hertog is one of the most legally peculiar municipalities in Europe — a collection of Belgian enclaves embedded within the Netherlands, itself containing Dutch counter-enclaves within the Belgian ones. The borders run through private homes, restaurants, and shops, with the nationality of a doorstep once determining which country's laws applied inside. This coin commemorates that cartographic absurdity, which dates to a series of medieval land division agreements between the Duke of Brabant and the Lords of Breda, never fully rationalized in the centuries since.
