Reverse description Within a raised central circle, a laureate child's bust in right profile, the head adorned with a floral wreath composed of small blossoms and foliage rendered in fine relief. The Arabic legend 'أطفال اليوم' (The children of today) arcs above in the outer field and 'أبطال الغد' (are the heroes of tomorrow) arcs below, separated by the circular border. The portrait is modeled in a clean, classical style consistent with commemorative coinage of the period.

Additional information

The International Year of the Child, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly for 1979, prompted a wave of commemorative issues from member states. Iraq's participation came under the Ba'athist government, the same year Saddam Hussein formally assumed the presidency following Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr's forced resignation in July. Specimen strikings were prepared for official distribution and diplomatic presentation rather than circulation.

Iraqi nickel commemoratives from this period are frequently encountered with weak peripheral detail, a known characteristic of the Berne-produced dies used for several late-1970s Iraqi issues.
