Additional information

Iraq's 1970 FAO coinage was issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's global "Food for All" campaign, which prompted dozens of nations to strike commemorative circulation pieces throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. Iraq's participation came just two years after the Ba'ath Party consolidated power following the July 1968 coup — a government acutely interested in projecting modernizing agricultural ambition, particularly around grain cultivation in the Tigris-Euphrates basin.

The FAO series pieces from Iraq are frequently encountered in uncirculated condition, suggesting limited actual distribution.
