Portugal's participation in the 1988 Seoul Games was modest — four athletes across three sports, no medals. The coin was issued under the Estado Novo's successor democracy at a moment when Portuguese sport still hadn't recovered its Olympic footing after the country's absence from the 1984 Los Angeles Games, which Lisbon boycotted in solidarity with the Soviet-led bloc despite not being a Warsaw Pact member.
