Reverse description The reverse presents a bold allegorical composition commemorating the Foundation of Portugal and the Battle of Ourique. A large upright sword dominates the center of the field, flanked on the left by a stylized Celtic or Moorish wheel motif and on the right by a prominent crescent, evoking the symbols of the medieval Reconquista. The years '1140' and '1139' are inscribed in the lower field to either side of the sword, referencing the founding of the kingdom and the decisive battle respectively. A circular bilingual legend encircles the entire design, reading 'FUNDACAO DE PORTUGAL' and 'BATALHA DE OURIQUE', separated by decorative stops at the upper rim.
