| Obverse description | The copper-nickel centre features a map of Africa overlaid with a broken chain motif, with an inset detail of the Cape Verde Islands at left. The coat of arms of Cape Verde and those of the Organisation of African Unity member states appear at the top of the field. The denomination '250 ESCUDOS' is inscribed in large characters to the left. The outer brass ring bears five stars on each side flanking the design, with the country name 'REPUBLICA DE CABO VERDE' inscribed along the lower arc within laurel branches. |

The Organisation of African Unity, founded in Addis Ababa in 1963, dissolved in 2002 when it was reconstituted as the African Union — making the anniversary this coin commemorates something of a backward glance at a body that no longer existed. Cape Verde joined the OAU in 1975 upon independence from Portugal, giving the island nation just 27 years of membership before the organisation itself lapsed.
