The upper left quadrant shows a stylised figure at a lectern with a screen, representing education; the upper right quadrant features wind turbines and a solar panel array above a house with a water tap, symbolising renewable energy and infrastructure. The lower left quadrant depicts stylised birds in flight accompanied by '@' symbols, representing communications and technology; the lower right quadrant shows schematic figures of a family, representing social development. Two wheat ears flank the lower field, and the dates '1975' and '2015' appear at the bottom. Additional information

Cape Verde declared independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975, following the PAIGC liberation movement's long armed campaign fought primarily on the mainland of Guinea-Bissau rather than the islands themselves. The two territories were initially governed under a unified party structure with the expectation of eventual political merger — an arrangement that collapsed entirely after the 1980 coup in Bissau, forcing Cape Verde to reconstitute its own single-party state under the PAICV.

The .925 silver KM#55a is the premium variant of this commemorative, issued alongside a base-metal counterpart.
