Mswati III was nineteen years old when he was crowned in April 1986, making him one of the youngest reigning monarchs in the world at the time. His accession followed the death of his father Sobhuza II, who had ruled for over sixty years — the longest verified reign of any monarch in recorded history. The interregnum between Sobhuza's death in 1982 and Mswati's coronation was managed by a queen regent amid considerable factional instability within the Swazi royal council.
