Obverse description The Arms of the Republic of Liberia displayed centrally within the field, featuring a three-masted sailing ship on the sea, a rising sun on the horizon, a palm tree, a dove in flight, a plough and spade in the foreground, and a scroll bearing the national motto 'THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE' above the shield. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' arcs along the upper periphery, with the date '19 88' flanking the shield at centre. The lower arc carries the denomination and bullion specifications 'HALF OUNCE 250 DOLLARS FINE GOLD', and a secondary legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' appears on a scroll at the base of the arms.
