Canada's kilogram silver issues in this format began in 2008, and by 2012 the Royal Canadian Mint had refined the production process enough to achieve the near-mirror surfaces and deep cameo contrasts these pieces are now known for. The Year of the Dragon issue sold out almost immediately upon release — the dragon is the most auspicious animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle, and Canadian lunar issues targeting diaspora collectors had developed a serious secondary market by this point in the series.
