Additional information

Niue has functioned as a coin-issuing vehicle for the New Zealand Mint since the 1990s, its status as a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand providing the legal authority to issue currency while the mint provides the commercial infrastructure. The arrangement is straightforwardly commercial — Niue's domestic economy has no use for a platinum one-ounce bullion coin, and none will circulate there.

The "Roaring Lion" belongs to a competitive bullion series market where platinum issues from smaller sovereign issuers have struggled historically against the Maple Leaf and Britannia for collector traction.
