The "Maple Leaf Forever" kilo was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's push into the ultra-fine silver market following the success of its .9999 fine bullion program — a purity standard the RCM pioneered and that competitors were slow to match. At one kilogram and struck to specimen standards, these were never intended to circulate; the $250 face value is purely nominal, the coin's silver melt value alone dwarfing it many times over.
Mintage was tightly limited, and the RCM released this through its collector subscription program rather than open market channels.
