Niue's late-1980s celebrity gold series was a frankly commercial exercise — the island's government discovered early that licensing famous names onto legal-tender coinage generated far more revenue than the face value implied. Beckenbauer was approached following the peak of his managerial career, having just guided West Germany to the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico.
