Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned coat of arms of New Zealand, rendered in fine detail, surmounted by a royal crown with a cross pattée finial. The quartered shield features the Southern Cross stars in the first quarter, three ships of discovery in the second and fourth quarters, a golden fleece in the third quarter, a sheaf of wheat in the lower left, and crossed hammers in the lower right. The shield is flanked on either side by silver fern fronds, the national symbol of New Zealand. The legend NIUE appears to the left and the date 1988 to the right, both arcing along the upper field in incuse Latin characters.
