Niue entered the commemorative coin market aggressively in the late 1980s, licensing sporting and entertainment properties through the Franklin Mint and related distributors to generate hard currency revenue — the island's GDP being too small to sustain a conventional numismatic program independently. The Davis Cup series was part of that initial wave.
Struck in 22-karat gold at a modest 10 grams, these were produced in low mintages aimed squarely at collector rather than circulaton markets, and virtually none reached the island itself.
