The Czech Lion bullion series, produced by the Czech Mint for Niue, launched in 2016 and quickly became one of the more commercially successful sovereign-backed gold programs in Central Europe. The 5 oz format was added to satisfy institutional and collector demand for larger holdings within the series' framework. Czech Mint strikes these under a longstanding agreement with Niue, whose nominal sovereignty over the issue is what confers legal tender status — a common arrangement in the modern bullion market that has nothing to do with the Pacific island's domestic economy.
