This piece belongs to the Royal Australian Mint's Masterpieces in Gold series, which ran in the early 1990s and drew on the long tradition of Australian proof gold production. Princess Anne was included in the series in her capacity as a prominent member of the Royal Family and accomplished equestrian — she competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics as part of the British three-day eventing team, the only royal to have done so, and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1971.
Mintages for individual issues in this series were tightly controlled, with production figures kept deliberately low to maintain collector premiums.
