| 裏面の説明 | Three interlocking circles arranged in a trefoil composition dominate the field. The upper circle contains the national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe with attendant scroll legends. The lower-left circle displays the emblem of the United Nations — a world map on azimuthal projection enclosed by olive branches — set against a deeply recessed, mirror-polished background. The lower-right circle features the emblem of the Organisation of African Unity, showing the outline of the African continent encircled by a wreath. Trilingual legends arc around the periphery of the coin: 'THE WORLD AND US' to the left, 'NÓS E O MUNDO' to the right, and 'LE MONDE ET NOUS' along the lower border. |

São Tomé and Príncipe gained independence from Portugal on July 12, 1975, after centuries of colonial rule on islands that had been uninhabited before Portuguese settlement in the 1480s. The new nation's first commemorative silver issues, struck in 1977, were produced for international collector markets rather than domestic circulation — the country's economy was far too fragile to absorb silver coinage, and the dobra itself had only been introduced at independence to replace the escudo.
KM#34 is part of a small suite of issues establishing the fledgling Banco Nacional's numismatic program, largely exported through European distributors.
