Obverse description The national coat of arms of São Tomé and Príncipe occupies the central field, featuring a shield supported by two African grey parrots with outstretched wings standing on a decorative base. Above the shield, a black five-pointed star is prominently displayed, flanked by two ribbon scrolls bearing portions of the country name. Below the shield, a scroll is inscribed with the national motto in three parts: UNIDADE, TRABALHO, and DISCIPLINA. The circular legend REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE S. TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1977 below it, and the denomination 250 Dobras appears along the lower rim.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a dynamic commemorative scene celebrating independence, showing a group of figures in traditional and festive attire engaged in music and celebration. Several figures wearing broad-brimmed hats carry rifles and instruments, while a central figure kneels in the foreground playing a large drum. The composition evokes the cultural pageantry associated with São Tomé and Príncipe's independence festivities of 12 July 1975. The legend INDEPENDÊNCIA is inscribed in the lower exergue in capital letters.
