Morocco issued this coin to mark the July 2002 marriage of Mohammed VI to Salma Bennani — the first time a Moroccan king had publicly named and presented his wife, breaking with a centuries-old tradition in which royal consorts remained entirely anonymous and absent from public life. Salma was subsequently granted the title Princess Lalla Salma, itself an unprecedented formal acknowledgment.
