Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of Moroccan independence from French and Spanish protectorate administration, which was formally restored on November 18, 1955, when Mohammed V returned from exile in Madagascar. The date mattered — France had forcibly deposed and exiled him in 1953 after he refused to denounce the nationalist movement, a miscalculation that accelerated rather than suppressed the independence drive.
Mohammed VI, who acceded in 1999, appears on commemoratives of this type in a direct continuation of the Alaoui dynasty's unbroken coinage tradition.
