Additional information

Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of Moroccan independence from France and Spain, formally recognized on March 2, 1956, following sustained pressure from the Istiqlal Party and the return of Mohammed V from exile in Madagascar. The choice of the 60th anniversary — rather than the 50th — for a major commemorative silver issue reflects the palace's deliberate use of numismatic programs to reinforce dynastic continuity under Mohammed VI, who acceded in 1999.
