Issued to mark the first anniversary of Mohammed VI's accession following the death of Hassan II in July 1999, this commemorative was among the earliest official coinage to define the new reign's numismatic identity. Hassan II had ruled for 38 years, and the transition carried genuine political weight — Mohammed VI moved quickly to signal reform, releasing political prisoners within weeks of taking the throne.
